The Retreat
After their retreat from the Boyne, both wings of the Jacobite army converged on Duleek to avoid being trapped in a pincer movement by King William’s army.
The bridge at the time was only half its present width, and many soldiers must have waded through the river Nanny. The French infantry brigade covered a confused retreat and Jacobite casualties were comparatively light. Subsequently the army was able to regroup west of the Shannon to continue the war.
